Derek Grasty is a proud father, accomplished writer, and distinguished educator. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, Derek graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School prior to earning a Bachelor of Arts degree (w/distinction) and Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Derek also completed additional graduate work in Education at Harvard University and California State University, East Bay.
Derek began his career in education in the mid-eighties as a teacher in Detroit, Lynwood and East Palo Alto respectively. He was widely regarded as an influential leader to
both students and other teachers. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to he position of Vice Principal then Principal in charge of overseeing
the curriculum, student success, school safety, and the daily operations of the school for hundreds of students, staff, and faculty. As
a Principal, Derek continued his responsible stewardship, with an emphasis on student engagement, building lasting relationships with his students
and their families.
For his work, Derek was awarded the Educator of Excellence Award by the South Alameda County AAAE in 2009,
and his schools in Hayward won the city's Environmental Award.
Derek serves students as a guest teacher in the Mt. Pleasant School District, and mentors administrators in Santa Cruz County. He also promotes Wednesday afternoon student distance learning opportunities supporting life skills, via 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley, Inc.
Derek has served as Association of California School Administrators- Hayward Chapter, Treasurer or President from 2001-2010, organized a mentoring program in East Side, and served on the East Side Bond Oversight Committee for 2011-2017.

Philosophy
Derek is an educational leader who believes in always making students our first priority. As an educator, he knows first hand how the decisions made on the Board will impact students in the classroom. He understands the needs of students, parents, and educators because he has personal experiences with all three.
Education
Lifelong learning is one of Derek's focus areas. His education includes graduating from the the University of Michigan with Bachelor (with distinction) and Masters degrees. Additional graduate work at Harvard University; and California State U., East Bay (Hayward) and Administrator Academies.
